A Data-Driven Approach to Skating

Long ago and far away Jared Wilber was out flip-tricking around and an idea hit him. What if you could take a data-driven approach to skating? Smash together all this awesome skate insight to create super interesting badass visualizations.

Well, we’re not exactly sure that it went down like that, but we’d like to think so.

For the last couple of months, Wilber has been manually aggregating mountains of skateboard data and insights. He takes all that sterile stuff, works his magic and boom. Rad visuals with insanely interesting pieces of info come out on the other side.

So far he’s put together three different skateboard data visualizations.

The networks of skateboarding filmmakers.

This is the most recent data viz piece that looks at skate filmmakers, alongside the skaters they’ve shot the most. From there, he was able to look into what filmer gets clips with what skater most often.

The second is an analysis of Koston’s tricks.

Koston is a legend. So, it’s only natural to take a deep dive into his career and look at everything from what his signature trick might be to his go-to flat ground game.

The third is a look at other skate data viz projects. From the physics of an ollie to a statistical analysis of Fully Flared.

Head over to 4PLY and check out the info when you have a minute. It’s super interesting and we couldn’t be more stoked to see what other visualizations they put together. And if you have an idea for something give them a shout! They’re open to ideas.
